Teeth Whitening and Dental Stains
There are two types of dental stains: intrinsic and extrinsic. Heredity, tetracycline antibiotics, and dental trauma commonly cause internal stains. Intrinsic stains are hard to remove with teeth whitening treatment; therefore Dr. Lee recommends alternative treatment, such as porcelain veneers or dental bonding.
Extrinsic stains result from dark-colored foods and beverages. Most commonly red wine, tea, coffee, and dark berries cause this type of stain. Aging and tobacco are also known causes of extrinsic stains.
Dr. Lee uses Opalescence to whitening stained teeth. This whitening gel is chemically activated and produces faster, more dramatic results than store-bought products. Opalescence effectively brightens dull-looking smiles over a short period of time.
At-Home Teeth Whitening
Dr. Lee recommends at-home treatment for patients who don’t necessarily need quick results. At the beginning of your teeth whitening appointment, Dr. Lee will examine your teeth to determine if they’re strong enough to support this treatment. Next she will take a dental impression of your upper and lower rows of teeth. From this impression, she will create a set of customized whitening trays.
Opalescence whitening gel comes in three different flavors: mint, melon, and regular. The gel comes in four different strengths so that your treatment can be customized to meet your individual needs. Dr. Lee will send you home with your trays and whitening gel.
Depending on your preference, whitening trays can be worn for 30 minutes a day or overnight for two weeks. You will begin to notice results in one to two weeks.
In-Office Teeth Whitening
Patients who are looking for quicker results often opt for in-office teeth whitening treatment. Our chair-side treatment takes about an hour to complete. Dr. Lee will begin the procedure by examining the strength of your teeth to determine if they will support the whitening gel. Next she cleans and dries your teeth. Opalescence protects tooth enamel and prevents sensitivity. Although the results from professional teeth whitening treatment aren’t permanent, they are long lasting.
You can expect dramatic results upon completing this treatment. Opalescence brightens smiles by 5-10 shades.
Dr. Lee recommends in-office teeth whitening for patients who want to whiten their smile before a big event, such as a wedding or big meeting. After a consultation with Dr. Lee, she will help you decide which treatment is ideal for your unique needs.
