Four Tips for a Whiter, Brighter, Better Smile
If you’re not ready to try Dr. Lee’s professional options, try these at-home tips for teeth whitening.
1. Use whitening toothpaste.
Although it won’t yield the same results as professional treatments, some whitening toothpastes may help fight daily staining agents from coffee, tea, and dark veggies and fruits. Whitening toothpastes generally contain hydrogen peroxide, which has been known to lift stains for a brighter, more youthful smile.
Regular toothpaste can help remove stains from your teeth by reducing the amount of bacteria in your mouth and hindering plaque buildup. The friction caused by scrubbing teeth with bristles also tends to remove light surface stains.
2. Create a baking soda paste.
Baking soda can be found in many whitening toothpastes, but did you know you can make your own baking soda toothpaste at home? Using baking soda obviously shouldn’t replace brushing with regular, fluoridated toothpaste. But baking soda not only removes stains, it comes with the the added benefit of reducing the bacteria in your mouth.
This mildly abrasive solution is known for removing surface stains on teeth, making them appear whiter.
Simply mix one teaspoon of baking soda with two teaspoons of water. Apply the mixture to your toothbrush and brush your teeth. Do this three to five times a week.
3. Eat right.
Just like certain foods can stain your teeth, other foods can help clean your teeth. Crunchy produce like celery, apples, and carrots can scrub light stains off your teeth as you chew. Foods like cheese and yogurt that are high in calcium help keep your teeth white by strengthening tooth enamel.
You should also limit certain foods like red wine, coffee, soda, tomato sauce, and dark berries that are known to cause teeth staining.
4. Try oil pulling.
Oil pulling has been around for hundreds of years but has become increasingly popular in the last ten years. Simply place a tablespoon of coconut oil (the most popular), sesame oil, or sunflower oil in your mouth and swish it through your teeth for 15-20 minutes. Many people have reported having whiter teeth after consistently using this method.
Oil pulling is known for other health benefits, as well, such as:
- Cavity and gum disease prevention
- Strengthening teeth, gums, and jaw
- Reduction of bad breath
- Headache relief
- Improved sleep
- Reduced acne and other skin issues
While no scientific studies have proven that oil pulling significantly whitens teeth, the added health benefits make the practice worthwhile.
Your Best Option for Teeth Whitening
While these home whitening tips may reduce some stains, none compare to the results of professional teeth whitening treatments. In just one appointment, or a couple of home treatments, Dr. Lee can lighten your teeth up to eight shades. That’s dramatic! You’ll look younger, healthier, and you’ll feel more confident sharing your bright smile.
