Pinhole Technique vs Traditional Grafting

Traditionally, gum recession has been treated with tissue grafting. In fact, it is still widely used to address the condition. This procedure involves removing a wedge of tissue from the roof of the mouth, then adding it to the area of gum deficiency. It requires incisions and stitches. While this treatment is incredibly effective, many individuals avoid the procedure for fear of pain and discomfort.

The Chao pinhole technique eliminates the need for scalpels and sutures. Rather than incising and reflecting the gum tissue, this procedure only requires tiny pinhole incisions. The pinhole technique shows promising results. So far, the only peer-reviewed study was included in a 2012 issue of International Journal of Periodontics & Restorative Dentistry. The study confirmed stable results over a nine-year period. The inventor of the technique, Dr. John Chao, reports that most cases are much older now and still showing successful results.
