What is TMJ Disorder?
TMJ disorder is a condition that affects the temporomandibular joints, located on either side of the jaw. It may develop because of inflammation in the surrounding muscles. Or it may stem from damage to the joints themselves, such as a slipped disc.
Symptoms of TMJ disorder can include:
- Jaw pain
- Jaw stiffness or limited range of motion
- Pain when biting
- A popping or clicking noise when you move your jaw
- Ringing in the ears
- Frequent headaches
- Neck and/or shoulder pain
How does TENS work?
TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Dr. Lee will place electrodes on your skin, and they will deliver tiny electrical shocks to knotted muscles or damaged nerves. You should feel a mild tingling sensation, along with reduced pain and spasms. Dr. Lee can adjust the frequency and strength of the electrical pulses until they reach a strong but comfortable level.
Does TENS really work?
Research shows that TENS therapy is more effective in managing pain than medication alone. That being said, TENS is only intended as a pain management tool, not as a treatment for the underlying causes of TMJ disorder.
Investigation is still underway as to why TENS alleviates pain. Some researchers believe that the electrical shocks block pain receptors to the brain. Others posit that the treatment releases endorphins, which naturally helps to reduce pain. However it works, some people experience pain relief for up to 24 hours following a TENS session.
Is TENS safe?
TENS is a safe treatment when used appropriately. Because TENS machines are available for purchase and use at home, it is important to check with your doctor before beginning treatment and to make sure that the electrical stimulation is not set too high. At Smiles 4 Grant Park, you will receive TENS treatment in the office, so you can trust that there will be no ill effects.
That being said, there are certain people who should not undergo TENS. These include:
- Pregnant women
- Those with heart problems or heart disease
- Anyone with a defibrillator or pacemaker
- Cancer patients
- Those with epilepsy
- People with deep vein thrombosis
- Anyone with a bleeding disorder
