TMJ Treatment: 7 Ways to Beat TMJ Pain
August 25, 2023What’s included in a smile makeover?
September 29, 2023Dentures are remarkably common. But jokes and the media tend to promote common stereotypes about these dental restorations, leading to a lot of confusion. Fortunately, dentures have come a long way since the false teeth that your parents or grandparents used to wear. Today’s prosthetics are made with state-of-the art technology and materials, giving them a highly realistic look and feel.
At Smiles for Grant Park in Atlanta, GA, Dr. Abbey Lee offers various types of dentures, including full, partial, and All-on-4® implants. With her attention to detail and design skill, you will enjoy a dental prosthetic that looks and feels just like your natural teeth.

Myth #1: Dentures Look Fake.
Older generations may have had to wear dentures that were obviously synthetic, but that’s not the case today! We offer digital dentures, using virtual impressions to design prosthetics that look and feel incredibly realistic. Plus, our technology greatly reduces the number of appointments needed to design your denture.
For even more naturalism, consider implant-supported dentures. These prosthetics attach to permanent implant posts and sit right along the gum line.
Myth #2: It’s Difficult to Eat with Dentures.
Truthfully, it will take a few weeks to adjust to wearing dentures, so during this initial phase, it might be a bit difficult to eat. Once you get used to your new teeth, however, eating will be easy. With traditional dentures, you will need to avoid a few hard-to-bite foods, such as whole apples, corn-on-the-cob, and very chewy meats. You should also limit foods like popcorn and nuts, as the particles can become lodged underneath your restoration.
With implant-supported dentures, however, you will have virtually no dietary restrictions!
Myth #3: If I Have Complete Dentures, I Don’t Need to Go to the Dentist.
Even if you don’t have any remaining natural teeth, routine oral care is vital. Bacteria can still accumulate in your mouth and under your denture, leading to gum disease. And you still need oral cancer screenings, which are a routine part of every dental checkup.
Myth #4: Dentures Last Forever.
Complete dentures last an average of ten years. They may also need periodic relining and adjustments, since your jawbone will start to recede as a result of tooth loss. Your dentist can check the fit at each of your appointments.
Implant-supported dentures have a comparable lifespan to traditional dentures. But the good news is that the implants themselves often last a lifetime. So, while you will likely need to replace the restoration, you will not need surgery more than once. Plus, with implants, you don’t have to worry about jaw recession and subsequent denture adjustments.
Myth #5: If I Get Dentures Now, I Can’t Get Implants Later.
If you’re considering your restorative options and just can’t decide between traditional and implant dentures, you can change your mind later down the road! Keep the possibility of jaw recession in mind, though. If you wait too long to get implants, you may not have enough bone tissue or you may need a bone graft to qualify for treatment.
