TMJ Treatment: Exploring Conservative, Medical, and Surgical Options
December 22, 2023Cosmetic Dentistry & Orthodontics: Distinctions and Collaboration
January 26, 2024We might be almost a week into the new year, but it’s not too late to set some resolutions for 2024. Instead of setting broad or unrealistic goals, decide on simple, actionable resolutions. For instance, a few clearly defined guidelines can help you enjoy a healthier smile this year and for years to come. In this post, your dentist in Atlanta, GA, suggests a few simple changes and explains how to make your goals a reality.
Dr. Abbey J. Lee and the team at Smiles 4 Grant Park are committed to the total wellbeing of our patients. Although we offer a variety of state-of-the-art treatment options, our primary goal is to keep dental problems from occurring in the first place. We accomplish this both through routine preventive care and through patient education.

Learn Proper Brushing Technique
You most likely are already in the habit of brushing your teeth (though if you’re not, you should make that your #1 resolution in 2024!). But did you know there’s actually a correct way to brush?
First, make sure you are using a soft-bristled brush and a toothpaste with the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to your teeth, and use small, circular motions. Brush for two full minutes, focusing for thirty seconds each on the four quadrants of your mouth: upper right and left, and lower right and left. Don’t forget to brush your tongue!
Really Commit to Flossing
Although most people brush their teeth daily, only about 32% report flossing daily. An equal number of people admit that they never floss at all! But this is a vital part of dental hygiene, since brushing can’t remove all bacteria or food from between teeth. Flossing dramatically decreases your risk for tooth decay and gum disease.
Drink More Water
You probably know that you should be drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day. But did you know that proper hydration is actually important for your dental health? Water, especially during and after meals, helps to wash away bacteria, sugars, and food particles that would otherwise lead to decay. Other beverages don’t have this effect and can actually harm your teeth.
Prioritize Produce and Whole Grains
“Eating healthy” looks different for different people. But when it comes to eating for oral health, the guidelines are clear: choose fruits, veggies, and complex carbs over sugars and simple starches. Sugar is the primary food source for oral bacteria, so when you choose carbohydrates that are more difficult to break down, you deprive those microbes of their energy source.
