7 Tips for Patients with Invisalign Clear Aligners
April 12, 2023Five Essential Things to Know Before Getting a Smile Makeover
May 10, 2023According to the CDC, more than a quarter of American adults over age 65 have less than nine teeth. Approximately 120 million people in the United States are missing at least one tooth reports the American College of Prosthodontists. Dentures, dental bridges, and dental implants are all useful tooth replacement options. However, dental implants win when it comes to durability, longevity, and functionality.
Dr. Abbey J. Lee places and restores dental implants in her Grant Park dental practice. If you are missing one or more teeth, contact our friendly dental team today to schedule an initial consultation!
In the meantime, here are the answers to the most common FAQs about dental implants:
- What are dental implants?
A dental implant is just one part of the tooth replacement process. The implant itself is a small titanium screw-like post that mimics the function of a tooth root. Bridges and dentures on their own do not replace the tooth root, just the crown.
On top of the dental implant is an abutment and then the restoration. Dental crowns, dental bridges, and dentures can all be attached to the implant to complete the process.
- Am I a good candidate for implants?
Most likely, yes! Most people with one or more missing teeth are candidates for dental implants. However, they must be willing and able to undergo a more invasive treatment, have adequate bone density, and have good oral health.
Even if you have low bone density or poor oral health, Dr. Lee will recommend a bone graft or other treatments to address your specific oral health issues. Once those problems are resolved, she can move forward with placing the dental implants.
The best way to determine if you are a candidate for dental implants is to schedule an appointment with our Grant Park dentist!
- Can implants replace all of my teeth?
Dental implants can replace one, two, seven, twelve, or all twenty-eight of your teeth (that’s all but your wisdom teeth)! Depending on your specific needs, you may require a dental crown, dental bridge, or denture.
In the instance of replacing all of a person’s teeth, the dentist strategically places four (All-on-4®), six, or eight implants, then attach the denture. The denture may be removable or fixed.
- Are there any disadvantages to dental implants?
As with any surgical procedure, there are risks of infection, inflammation, and pain. There is also a risk of dental implant failure, but varying studies report the dental implant success rate to be between 90% and 95%.
- How long until my smile is completely restored?
Between four and eighteen months could pass from the beginning of the process (initial consultation) to the complete healing. However, your mouth could feel normal within a week after the placement of the implants. Everyone’s mouths heal at different rates and most of the healing happens beneath the surface. Your dentist will be able to provide a treatment timeline specific to you.
