3. How long does a crown last?

• Do not bite fingernails or chew on hard foods or objects
• Visit the dentist at least every six months

4. What happens during a dental crown procedure? 

The dental crown procedure occurs in two stages: 

• Stage One: The dentist will shave off part of your natural tooth, take digital impressions, and place a temporary crown over the tooth. 
• Between appointments, a dental lab technician will create your customized restoration, then send it to the dentist’s office. 
• Stage Two: Your temporary crown will be removed and the permanent crown is placed. The dentist will make modifications if necessary. 

5. How do I know if my crown needs to be replaced? 

Over time, it is possible that your crown could become loose, worn, chipped, or cracked. You will most likely feel discomfort or pain if that is the case because the inner part of your tooth will be exposed. Without replacing it, decay will likely form underneath the crown and cause more damage to the tooth.
