A Comparison of Implants and Dentures
August 14, 2017How Invisalign Measures Up
August 28, 2017Crowns are designed to restore damaged teeth. Atlanta, GA dentist Dr. Abbey Lee offers three types of crowns, all created from different materials. After a consultation, she recommends which material will best suit your specific needs. For example, back teeth benefit from metal crowns, whereas porcelain crowns are used for visible teeth to provide an esthetic restoration. Grant Park dental crowns strengthen and repair damaged teeth to restore smile appearance and oral function.
Dr. Lee conducts a thorough dental examination before she recommends this treatment. Patients who decide to have a dental crown placed should expect to schedule two appointments to complete this procedure.

Why Do I Need a Dental Crown?
Patients who have a damaged tooth require a dental crown for proper correction. This includes a severely decayed, discolored, fractured, or broken tooth. Dr. Lee replaces a single missing tooth with a dental implant and crown.
To place a dental implant, Dr. Lee surgically imbeds a titanium post, which resembles a screw, into the jawbone through a small incision in the gums. Once the implant has fully integrated (four to six months), she will attach the custom-created crown to the post. This procedure replaces the visible portion of the tooth, as well as the tooth root. Dr. Lee recommends this treatment for it’s esthetic and functional benefits, but also because the implant stimulates the jawbone, which prevents facial structural changes.
Possible Materials
After taking x-rays, Dr. Lee will help you determine which material is best for your needs. She offers porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, and gold crowns. Porcelain is durable and esthetically pleasing. This material provides a realistic and natural restoration. Dr. Lee recommends porcelain crowns for patients who suffer from metal allergies.
Porcelain-fused-to-metal is ideal for patients who need the strength of a metal crown, but want a natural-looking restoration. This type of crown is designed from metal, but has a thin layer of porcelain over the top to seamlessly blend within your smile.
Gold crowns are not natural-looking, but they are incredibly strong. These crowns are created from a combination of multiple metals. Dr. Lee applies gold crowns to back teeth.
Procedure
At the first dental visit, Dr. Lee will take x-rays and use a local anesthetic to numb the affected tooth and tissues. For patients who have dental fear, we can administer oral conscious sedation or nitrous oxide. Next she will prepare the tooth by removing the unhealthy bacteria and reshaping the structure. This allows for the crown to lay completely flat against the tooth so that a secure attachment will form.
She then takes a dental impression, which she will send to an off-site lab. Technicians use the impression to fabricate the custom-made dental crown from the preferred material. Before you leave the initial appointment, a temporary crown is attached to the damaged tooth to provide minimal protection while the permanent dental crown is created.
At the follow-up visit, the permanent restorative device is bonded to the tooth with dental cement. You can expect long-lasting results that are durable and functional.
