Grant Park Dental Crowns
At Smiles 4 Grant Park, dental crowns are used to halt future damage from tooth decay. Dr. Lee places custom-made crowns on top of each damaged, cracked, or decayed tooth to restore the tooth’s function and appearance. Each crown is uniquely shaped to match the patient’s smile and provide a comfortable restoration. Dr. Lee uses crowns that are made from durable materials, so you can rest assured they will last many years, and will resist cracking, chipping, and staining.
Choose a Crown, Not an Extraction
A severely decayed tooth should always be restored because it can cause bad breath, spread decay to neighboring teeth, and eventually cause you great pain. When a deep cavity is present, the worst thing you can do is delay treatment, as this can lead to a tooth infection, a painful abscess, and the need for an extraction. If you have a deep cavity, Dr. Lee will perform a root canal treatment to remove the bacteria and decayed tooth matter, and finish the restoration with a natural-looking dental crown. This crown will reduce the risk of further damage and feel like a natural tooth in your mouth.
Replace A Missing Tooth
If you have a missing tooth, the best replacement option is a dental implant/crown combination. Dental implants are composed of small titanium bases that are surgically placed in the jaw, where they fuse with natural bone tissue and mimic the function of natural tooth roots. Dental implants require 3-6 months of healing time after implantation before a crown can be attached, but the result is tooth that will look and feel just like the tooth you lost.
Crowns and Bridges
Along with protecting teeth from future damage and replacing single missing teeth, multiple crowns can be bonded together to replace one to three missing teeth. To create a dental bridge, Dr. Lee places two porcelain crowns on the healthy teeth on either side of a gap, which are connected by an artificial tooth, or pontic. Bridges are one-piece restorative devices and allow patients the opportunity to fill in the space left from multiple missing teeth, while stabilizing the healthy teeth adjacent to the gap. The crown and bridge solution provides patients with a natural looking restoration and maintains the function of your teeth. Unlike dental implants, however, dental bridges will need to be maintained and repaired after a few years.
What are crowns made of?
Today, most dental crowns are made from highly durable dental porcelain. Crowns can also be made of metal or porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM)—but ceramic crowns tend to be the most natural looking material. Dental crowns are custom-made in dental laboratories, based on a bite impression you will take in Dr. Lee’s office. Since crowns must be created to fit over a treated tooth, Dr. Lee will fit you with a temporary crown while you wait one to two weeks for your crown to be made.
